Shout out to Southwest Kia in Mesquite

So I drove one.

I picked up Genie with her new water pump and the rear door handle cap replaced today. I asked sales if they had a Stinger to take out, and they said sure I got a red GT1. They didn’t want me putting too many miles on it, but I didn’t have that much time anyway. The young sales lady sat in the back seat, but she only spoke when I spoke to her. Very un -sales like and very appreciated.

The seat was very comfortable with good bolstering. The car felt tight and composed and handled great as far as I could test it on straight suburban streets in a light rain. NVH was good, except a little extra street noise through the windows. I am spoiled by the K900, so take that with my perspective in mind

The engine noise is music to my ears acceleration is great I really like this car. I also like the look it appeals to what boy racer is still left in me.

Ask me anything else you want to know

Scooby was glad to have Genie home She jumped right on and started licking the rain drops. Cats are weird.

What was the interior quality like? How were the seats?

I'm just jealous really. Seeing more and more pop up around me, even in yellow. Could you see yourself in one of those if you didn't have Genie?

Interior quality was very good. The wheel leather feels great in your hands and premium. The dash, like you see around those vents, is synthetic, but soft, padded, and quality. The door card is covered in a durable but well padded leather or leatherette. The door sill is textured synthetic. The lower part of the door where the storage pocket is is hard plastic, but very little else is. The buttons are quality. I’m gonna say the whole package is not far off a 5 series.

The seats were very comfy with good bolstering while not squeezing too much. I could surely road trip in them. Since I don’t have much trunk control, I appreciated the support. Head room was good. I’m 5’8”. The shoulder rests were perfect for me.

The rear seat will take a  wheelchair just fine with no squeezing, in case you’re worried about that.

I wasn’t, but glad to hear.

Absolutely.

There was a yellow one in the service bay. It’s going to the same guy who bought a red one last year. Both are heavily accessorized. This one was getting an air suspension fitted. I don’t know who the owner is, but I know he races and doesn’t mind spending big $$ on Stingers.

But why get the stinger when you can get the G70?

Sorry, I guess t hat’s my smart ass backward way of saying there’s pretty good leg room in the back.

Oh, I know. But it’s also good to know that the back is spacious enough because damn wheelchairs are unwieldy.

That’s a good question, and I’d guess it’s down to aesthetic preference as much as anything else. If I were shopping this car, I’d also cross shop a Genesis as well as the E class

Isn’t the G70 closer to 3 series size?

Honestly, if I were shopping, this is where the lift back would really make a difference. When I drive thre e or four people, the chair goes in back, and the storage in this thing is more useful than a comparably sized sedan’s trunk would be.

That’s awesome to hear, people are really enjoying them . I can’t get over how good that yellow looks and now I really want to drive one.

Agreed, and I’m not usually one for yellow cars.

Go drive one. You’ll like it.

So what you’re saying is what you actually want is the Genesis G80 Sport.

Also available in 5.0L V8.

Is that rod against your right thigh how you operate the brake?

Did they have the new K900 yet? should be interesting to compare this to  that one.

Well I wouldn’t kick it out of my garage.

Yes, the G80 is more my size. I like it a lot.

Those are my portable hand controls I use for test drives and car rentals. They screw on to clamp the pedals, and you push one for gas and the other for brake. They rest in my lap. Here’s a pic of a model similar to mine.

They do. The one in the showroom is in a gorgeous deep blue with a tan interior and matte wood accents. It’s really fabulous, with so many well thought details. I didn’t ask to drive it because I didn’t have time and I’d already driven one just for fun test drive on their time. Also, I’m afraid I’d want to upgrade. The only thing is I’m not sure I don’t like my car’s exterior design better than the new one.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, and the new Sedona comes in that blue now with a cool two tone interior. And 360 cameras, which are a blessing on a minivan.

I want to test drive one some time but my small town dealer hardly has even Stingers in inventory, managed to drive the only example they had, a GT2 last year anyway.

I can imagine 3-4 years from now the new K900 selling for under $ 35k should be a luxury bargain given the tech and performance. You’d only get a mid level 4 cylindrr German equivalent for that same price.

I asked my girl how many they sell. She said one a month, which sounds pretty good, honestly. Southwest Kia has a couple of locations, so they can afford to have more stock on tap.

I’m glad they didn’t give me any flak about taking a spin like I’ve heard others tell. This dealer has pretty good in our experience.

And another thing journalists keep scratching their heads at this car, especially Jalopnik. I can’t believe they can’t see the point of this car. It’s obvious. No one thinks they’re going to move many. It’s so it can be there on the show room and let people sit in it and say “that’s a Kia?!” Then it changes the way they look at the rest of the line. And then people like me drive around and folks look at my car and say “that’s a Kia?!” And they think maybe they’ll go take a look when it’s time for their next car.

The K900 is doing its part to move Kia upmarket toward better margins across the board.

I fully support more Stinger content!

Love the Stinger, especially the GT. In my opinion the GT1 is the sweet spot. Most of the tech without a few details. If I had a choice of one it would probably be the GT1 AWD.

The GT1 was good. I’d  probably go loaded up, myself. You wouldn’t go wrong with either.
